Your down payment is the cash you contribute upfront. It affects your loan, interest rate, and peace of mind-here's how to think about it.

## Down payment basics

**No minimum required:** Many lenders approve loans with little or no down payment. However, larger down payments offer real benefits.

**Why put down more:** A bigger down payment lowers the amount you finance, which reduces your monthly payment and total interest paid. It also improves your loan-to-value ratio, sometimes earning you a better interest rate.

**How much is smart?** Common targets are 10-20% of the vehicle's price, but there's no one-size-fits-all answer. If you have cash, putting more down saves money. If cash is tight, a smaller down payment keeps liquidity for emergencies.

**Trade-in as down payment:** Your trade-in equity counts as part of your down payment, reducing what you finance.

**Gap insurance consideration:** Smaller down payments mean more loan balance relative to car value-this is where GAP protection becomes especially valuable.

**Your goal:** Balance affordable monthly payments with long-term savings. More down = lower cost; less down = more cash in your pocket now.
